More Freedom with the Right Support

At Life & Mobility, we do everything we can to give people with limited mobility as much freedom as possible. The new Neox is a wonderful example of that: a lightweight wheelchair with fully adjustable settings. Trudis Nassette and her father, Karel, were among the first to try it, and they’re thrilled. Trudis: “We can go out again. And that makes Karel as happy as a child.”

Reduced mobility

Karel has a mild form of dementia. Trudis: “You can still have a normal conversation with him, but he doesn’t remember everything very well. He used to live at home with my mother, and as her caregiver I would often give her a break by taking him out for coffee or dinner. Now he lives in the Markenhof care center, but we still love going on little outings together.”
As Karel’s dementia progressed, he became less steady on his feet and the risk of falling increased. A rollator was no longer sufficient. Trudis: “We were given a loaner wheelchair from Markenhof, but it was far too heavy. I developed back pain from pushing it. Thanks to the occupational therapist, we got the chance to try the Neox  and that changed everything.”

“Sometimes he just forgets he’s even in a wheelchair.”

A world of difference

The Neox turned out to be a huge improvement. Trudis: “It’s a world of difference compared to before. The old wheelchair always gave me back pain, and that affected Karel’s mood too. He gets suspicious when he senses something’s wrong. The Neox is so much lighter and easier to handle. And on top of that, it looks so much better too. Maybe not the most important thing, but still… appearance matters, right?”

The integrated Newton seating system made it possible to adjust the wheelchair perfectly to Karel’s needs. “That’s especially important for him,” says Trudis. “If a wheelchair isn’t comfortable, he tends to stand up. He resists and wants to walk by himself. With the Neox, he just forgets he’s even in a wheelchair because it’s that comfortable.”

Freedom regained

The trial period with the Neox has long since ended, but Trudis and Karel are still making grateful use of it. “The wheelchair has made a huge difference in Karel’s life. We can go out again and that makes him as happy as a child. When he sees the Neox, his face lights up. He knows we’re going to do something fun. Shopping, having a drink on a terrace, eating fish at the market, or visiting family. He’s also able to take part again in many activities at the care center. None of that would have been possible without the Neox. Karel has truly regained a big part of his freedom.”
